Ngorongoro Crater National Park
The Ngorongoro crater is the remains of a volcano that collapsed about 2.5 million years ago. The crater rim has a diameter of about 20 kilometers. Inside, the land is flat and open. Apart from the lakes and some trees, it is mainly grassland. The Ngorongoro crater is full of animals, making it one of the most spectacular national parks in Africa. If you search for 'Ngorongoro' in a search engine like Google, you'll get thousands of links to sites loaded with the most beautiful pictures of animals. Driving to the crater rim, you'll find a small memorial, dedicated to the famous German wild life researcher Bernhard Grzimek (German, new window). This memorial cites an old Chinese proverb: 'Better light a candle than curse the darkness'. When I read this proverb on this memorial for the first time, back in 1999, it had a serieus impact on me. As already stated before, there are many web sites dedicated to Ngorongoro Crater National Park. Unfortunately most links are to safari companies and lodges. A web page that is dedicated to the volcano can be found here (new window).
